DVOA'ers on the cover of ONA

Topic created by EricW on Tue Jul 12, 2011 at 7:13 pmCongratulations to Julie Keim for taking and submitting a fine photo, of a well groomed and well dressed Greg Balter running in fine form at Collier's Mills, which made the cover of the July/August ONA which I just pulled out of my mailbox.
This is the kind of photo I'd like to see more regularly in all orienteering publications. -
Reply by j-man on Wed Jul 13, 2011 at 7:57 pmI look forward to seeing this photo. Incidentally, I think Greg has been on the cover of more than one ONA. Anyone have an idea who are the other multiple coverpeople? (I don't, but am curious.)Hopefully, there is no ONA cover jinx.

Reply by EricW on Thu Jul 14, 2011 at 10:17 pmWell, mostly, only this one is better, on many counts, at least to my eye.
Unfortunately, the nice knoll in the background was photoshopped flat for the ONA version, perhaps for the title. Still, the trees were kept in the background, so why couldn't the landform be saved?
And this one is cropped more appropriately at the bottom. The ONA version has more low interest ground cover below Greg's feet, for what, the date and address label?
And on further review, the ONA version has more low interest background added to each side, highly editted, with some nice framing trees photosh/chopped down. One net effect is to reduce the subject's proportion of the image. I might regret saying this, but in this case I would prefer to see more Balter, and less forest floor. -
Reply by furlong47 on Fri Jul 15, 2011 at 1:41 amThe image on Flickr is the original, not cropped at all. The extra forest floor at the bottom (on the cover) was very obviously clone brushed in on Photoshop, and not by me. There's some bad cloning going on around the edges as well - halves of trees and etc. I gave permission for the photo to be used but I wish I would have been informed that it would be altered, even slightly. However, my camera is older than dirt and even at highest quality the resolution is not really adequate for the magazine cover. The extra space on the sides might be the compromise to keep Balter looking sharp. (I am saving for a D-SLR but at this rate I might have it by 2013.)

Wow, Eric. Just wow.

Reply by Vadim on Fri Jul 15, 2011 at 9:58 amPhotoshop was necessary because the original picture was too small for the cover dimensions. However, sometimes it gets too ugly even if the image is big enough. There could be other possible solutions, but I'm not going to discuss them here.

Reply by kathyu on Tue Jul 19, 2011 at 11:10 amMaybe the club should ante up for a new camera for Julie so she can be the official photographer for NAOC 2012?

Reply by furlong47 on Tue Jul 19, 2011 at 12:12 pmI don't think that would be at all fair, for something that would also be for personal use. Orienteering is probably less than half of what I shoot. Now, if the club were to purchase equipment for anyone to borrow to use at club events, for the purpose of promoting the club and the sport, I'd be happy to provide services.
OUSA has other great photographers too, many with their own nice equipment.
