Topic created by anniemac on Tue Jun 17, 2025 at 11:07 amHI Everyone,We are so sad to share the news that our Dad left his body on Saturday June 14th - he was surrounded by loving family and, unsurprisingly, put forth a great effort to get to the finish line. I hope he and Dave Urban are comparing route choices somewhere - and maybe cursing the divine course setter for an uphill finish. You were his DVOA family, and he wanted those who knew him from the O days to be invited to his celebration. We are still working on all these details, but as soon as we have them, will let you know. You can read his obituary here: https://www.haganfuneralhome.com/obituary/hugh-macmullan-iiiWe invite you to share any memories on this thread. He would like to be remembered, and it would help us too.In lieu of flowers, honor him by going out and doing something worth doing. He will be living vicariously through you.Love,The MacMullan Family

Reply by JanetT on Tue Jun 17, 2025 at 11:59 amSorry to hear this, Ann, but not surprised. We'll keep orienteering in his honor. I remember chatting with him at events far afield (Canada!) when he was still able to travel, when we ran the same course. May his memory be a blessing to you and your family.

Reply by Steve on Tue Jun 17, 2025 at 2:05 pmIt has been an honor and a pleasure to know Hugh. He has always carried himself with pride and poise, a real role model. The world is a little bit less rosie with his passing.

Reply by Sandy on Tue Jun 17, 2025 at 4:33 pmMac has been a terrific friend over the years. We car pooled to a few events (and once survived a long ride home with a "check engine light" blinking the whole time) and did a 24-hour rogaine together. He hosted several of us at his home for some training runs and just made everyone always feel welcome. I even had a cameo in one of his books! We commiserated over botched West Point runs and celebrated our successes. I will always remember his positive attitude. You will be missed Mac. Condolences to the family.

Reply by twalsh on Wed Jun 18, 2025 at 11:07 amMac made such a major impact on DVOA. I remember first meeting him at a DVOA meeting in Lansdowne in 1980. He was president of the club at the time. One of his significant contributions to the club was the first color map (Ridley). But maybe his best contribution to the club was his children who continue making DVOA great. We'll miss you Mac.

Reply by kathyu on Wed Jun 18, 2025 at 3:37 pmI remember Mac bringing Lark on the trailer to a Philadelphia Sail Club meeting. He gave a funny and insightful talk about sailing and life. I can see Mac and Dave heading into the sunset, talking about fishing and sailing and orienteering. With love to the MacMullens.

Reply by EricW on Fri Jun 20, 2025 at 5:49 amFirst a link to the "Mac" thread on Attackpoint.Second, I echo twalsh's comment about Mac's impactful leadership in DVOA, for which we are all indebted.Thirdly, it occurred to me, is there anyone except possibly Mark F, still involved in DVOA, who was in the club at the beginning of Mac's pivotal presidency? I see twalsh was slightly late, and I was still in Ramapo/HVO at the time.He will always be an M35 to me.

Reply by Len on Thu Aug 21, 2025 at 8:02 amAnn, I missed this earlier but it was good bumping into you at Green Lane. Your dad was always friendly and considerate. I crossed paths with him on many orienteering legs and we also joined forces on a few rogaine legs. He always impressed me with his fitness and O-skills. I looked up to him and told him I want to be doing as well as he was in the woods when I'm his age. As I get older, I think I'm living up to that but I keep pushing myself and think of him often as I'm doing it.
