Reply by SMones on Tue Mar 18, 2025 at 8:46 amDave was a friend for more than 15 years. I orienteered with Dave and Kathy in seven states, including several trips to Anza Borrego in California. We carpooled together, them giving me rides north, and me giving them rides south.Dave had a simple philosophy of orienteering -- the shortest distance between two points was a straight line -- regardless (it seemed to me) of what lay in between. A little blood was par for the course. Knee replacements and other health issues did not stop him. He somehow got through every time. I just assumed he would get through this.Dave and Kathy directed many events, and helped at countless others. They were always there as a team. Lots of people are in DVOA. Dave was one of the few who was DVOA and, of course, a lot more.Steve Mones

Reply by JanetT on Tue Mar 18, 2025 at 9:34 pmWe're so sorry to hear this news. I always enjoyed Dave's cheerful attitude no matter what course he did. It'll be odd not to see him at the local events. Stay strong, Kathy; our sympathies to you and the rest of your family.

Reply by alenka0000 on Wed Mar 19, 2025 at 9:05 amOww. I'm so sorry, Kathy. Dave was such a special blend of happy and cranky and always funny -- I didn't think anything could get him down, but here we are. I can't believe I won't bump into him on the course again, stubbornly bashing through thorns and mud, like he always did.

Reply by chand on Fri Mar 21, 2025 at 5:46 pmDave was awesome. My favorite memory of him was at the Francis Slocum informal weekend event where he dropped his pen marking his rogaine map and started checking off controls using blood from a scratch he had gotten along the way.
