Mt Penn News

Topic created by rgbortz on Wed Feb 26, 2025 at 7:59 pmThe Mt Penn event is on for Mar 9th. The courses were set 15 months ago and the event had two postponements.A lot of juggling and rearrangements are now done and we can enjoy a late winter jaunt in the woods.Mt Penn may be the most runnable wide open woods in the DVOA arsenal of forrested venues for the vast majority of the land, at least this time of year. The 2017 version of the map, courtesy of the trail bikers, has a latticework of trails to play with your decision making. There are a couple trails either not on the map or altered from the 2017 updates but not much to interfere with navigation. Registration/checkin will be at Angora Fruit Farm and start and finish at Rotary Field which is about a kilometer trail walk (except white will be at Angora). Plan to come regardless of the remote start as we will have a shuttle for those who don't want the walk up to Rotary. Course details coming soon. There will be a Blue course.

Reply by rgbortz on Sat Mar 1, 2025 at 9:19 pmSorry for the delay but shifting start and finish in the last couple days created some holdup in getting all the details finalized. The courses are a little on the longish side of average length but will be keeping white through green on the east side of Skyline Drive. Should have all lenghts and climbs by Wednesday

Reply by rgbortz on Tue Mar 4, 2025 at 11:33 amCourses are set all but ready for printing. Weather looking good for Sunday. Nice walk, or run/jog for you people who should be enjoying your youth, to the start/finish area. Clothing drop will be at finish as you pass by on way to start. Just remember to pick up when finished. Highly recommended for Red and Blue: wear spikes or very sticky shoes for slippery, steep hillside. Not a bad idea for everyone but other courses will not experience the portion of the map Red and Blue get to enjoy. Relief facilities only available at registration/download area at Angora.Extermely important: whether you decide to walk or take the shuttle don't forget to download before leaving.

Reply by rgbortz on Thu Mar 6, 2025 at 2:43 pmParking: for those who are familiar with Rotary Park please do not drive there thinking you can park there. The gates are locked and we do not have permission to park there. Do not park on the outside of the gates as we need turnaround room for the shuttle and local hikers may park there. Please do not park in the Mt Penn Preserve trailhead lot. Leave that for hikers and bikers. Kindly park at Angora Fruit Farm. That is the event center.Your cooperation is much appreciated.

Reply by rgbortz on Fri Mar 7, 2025 at 7:13 pmPrivate Property: All courses have been designed for runners to avoid private property. Please observe all the red hashed private properties on the map and steer clear.Trails Alert : I recind my earlier comment about not too many new trails not interferring with navigation. We have added to the map what pieces of new trails I had time to investigate that might give you pause when coming upon them. There are two new trails very near a couple controls which did not make the map printing. There will be a map segment at the start showing these trails and the courses they affect. Please read this before going out on your course. This affects three controls in a small section that between the three affect all courses.
