A thought which has run through this posting course setter's mind several times in the past, and I am sure through other course setter's minds, has been put forth in Ed Scott's reply under the Hay Creek post. ( scroll down to, I think, May 30th post ).
Is there a way to allow the course setter to enter what they believe to be the optimum route choice for each course ? Any good course setter always has in mind what makes each course laid out appropriate for the given level. Making it possible for people to see what the setter had in mind may flick on the light for those who had difficulties or for those who wish they had made better, or just "other" choices. It also could serve to help course setter's improve their setting skills through the ensuing dialog on what people actually did compared to the anticipated choices and why they made the choices they did.
I can think of a complicated way to make it work by making the computer think the course setter ran each course, but hopefully the Guru will come back with a "That's Easy" solution.

Let me experiment with a couple of ideas, and I'll get back to you on this subject.
