The DVOA Summer Picnic, a potluck affair, will be at Fort Washington State Park on Saturday, June 18th.  The picnic will start promptly at 12:30 followed shortly thereafter by the summer club meeting.  There will be a special relay prior to the picnic and meeting, details are:

No money can be collected at this park for orienteering events.  Instead we will give pre addressed envelopes to mail in the entry fees.  We will keep track of who sends their fees in.  There is a rumor that a club member may be willing to collect the envelopes to mail in all at once.

The relay will consist of two person teams completing two courses printed on one map.  One yellow level course will be 3.1 km with 55 m climb and 9 controls, the other course will be 4.28 km with 130 m climb and 13 controls and will have orange level difficulty.  There will be 3 common controls spread evenly throughout both courses and runners will be given clue sheets (as well as clue sheets printed on the maps).  Each team must present two e-punches at the finish with the courses completed in order.  Cell phones can be used by teams to communicate with each other.  This relay can also be an exercise in memory orienteering.  Other creative ways of completing the courses is allowed as well.

To make things even more complicated: if one of the team members of the relay has never been orienteering before, 40 minutes will be taken from the teams time. If a team member is younger than 14 or older than 70 or has only started orienteering in 2011 then 20 minutes will be removed from their time.  If a team member is older than 55 then 10 minutes will be removed.

And for all of the speed demons that will be tearing up the course: 30 minutes will be added if they have been ranked in the top ten for DVOA in the last 5 years, 20 minutes will be added if ranked in the top 20 and 10 minutes for a top 30 ranking for the last 5 years.  Thanks to Kent Shaw we will have your number.

The starts will be at intervals beginning at 10 am and finishing at 11:30 am.  No starts will be allowed after that time.  In addition, no teams are allowed to help one another.  That would defeat the fun of the relay.

Come with a partner or come alone and we will help you find one and bring your favorite dish for sharing at the picnic.

We hope to see you there.

I must say this sounds a bit confusing???

Let me see if I got this right... Two runners, each with an e-punch, and both e-punches must have all the controls punched in order. So I'm thinking the slower runner would do the easier course and the faster one the harder course, meet up at one of the common controls and switch e-punches and then go run the same course again? Am I on the right track or completely off mark?

This would require two maps and it says only one? And this wouldn't put all the punches in order?

I'm sure it's pretty simple... but I'm just not seeing it... sorta like standing next to a control and not seeing it...

And beings I only just started back at Mt Penn, I guess I'm in for a time bonus, hurah!

Will there be a discussion on what food to bring, so we all don't show up with the same thing?

I am not part of the design team, but this is how I am reading the rules. Two people, each with an e-punch, will have one map with two courses printed on it. Contestant one will go to yellow one, while contestant two will go to orange one. Only one person will have the map, so person two will either have to remember where orange two is, or go to a pre-arranged meeting spot to re-read the map. The e-punches must be down loaded with either the yellow or orange course in full.

    Hope this helps.

Steve's got it! As for the food, it's ok if we all show up with bean salad, but it's worked out every year with little to no planning.

Thanks for clearing that up, I got it now. Should be interesting.

If cell phones are allowed how about FRS walkie talkies?

I've discussed this with my partner and we have a plan... but plans often go astray...

Could person 1 & 2 go together and complete course 1 and then person 1 complete course 2 while person 2 puts shrimp on the barbie ? Could person 1 complete 50% of couse 1, meet person 2 and person 2 complete the remainder of course 1 and all of course 2? Could course 2 be started before course 1?

One of the goals of this event is to encourage people to socialize with people they normally wouldn't partner with. No one will be allowed to run both courses themselves as we don't want to make this a typical event. You must have a partner (we can help you find one if need be) and one person must do course 1 while the other does course 2 and both people will start at the same time. It's up to you who keeps the map, if you run course 1 and then 2 or try to run them simutaneously (like a memory-O). Mike, I don't know anything about walkie talkies so if you think they will work, feel free to try them. No pictures of the maps, there should only be ONE map!

Looking forward to this event, and I for one will need a partner that day.
