SIAC Battery Replacement Information

Topic created by JanetT on Sat Jan 6, 2024 at 1:59 pmThe O-Store in Canada is offering a service for SIAC sticks. If you've been having issues with your air stick or know that the battery level is low, the information here may help you.

Reply by Ed on Mon Jan 8, 2024 at 4:08 pmThanks for this information. I have one of these SIAC (Air Si) finger sticks, and the manufacturers' guidance is to replace the battery roughly every 3 years.According to the websites, batteries are NOT user replaceable, and the only replacement center in North America is the one you mentioned. It looks like the North American location is going to limit the battery replacement service to twice a year in batches. If you do not discover you need a new battery in either January or June and ship it to Canada, you will have to ship your SIAC to Germany for replacement.Does DVOA have a way to test the battery level in SIACs? This would be really handy at events just before the semi-annual deadlines. (mid-January & mid-June)(Apparently you have to crack the shell and replace it to get at the battery.)Ed

Reply by twalsh on Tue Jan 9, 2024 at 2:20 pmOK my SIAC stick is long overdue for a new battery (4.5 years) but it is still working. Are we doing anything to send the sticks in batch for a battery replacement? I was a bit confused with what I saw on their website. They seem to want me to fill out an order form but in their narritive says "no individual orders".

Reply by furlong47 on Tue Jan 9, 2024 at 10:31 pmYou have to fill out that form and pay (as an individual) then get your stick to them by one of the three methods listed below the order form (shipping it either by February 15th or June 15th, or dropping it off at the Canadian Champs). I suppose a bunch of DVOA members could coordinate to ship the sticks together or for one person to take them to the COCs in order to save on mailing costs.Note that "battery replacement" is really a misnomer.... your whole SIAC is actually being replaced and the new one programmed with the same number.

Reply by Ed on Sat Jan 13, 2024 at 0:49 amI'm still wondering if DVOA has any method of measuring battery voltage or another parameter to help determine the remaining battery life of club member's SIAC card sticks?Lithium button cells have a shelf life (unused) of well over 10 years, and I am sure the manufacturer's 3-year replacement recommendation is based on HEAVY usage. The Sport Ident website shows what appears to be a regular station converted or programmed to read battery status.
