Even if there were overwhelming responses to hold this event ( which there aren't ) it needs to be canceled for Feb. 13th due to extreme icing on top of the snow cover making travel on top of it very trecherous. Snowshoes and skis are even worse than on foot as you cannot get any purchase on the snow and will only slide out of control. There is somewhat of a warmup in the immediate forecast but not enough extended elevation of temperatures to expext conditions to improve significantly for the weekend.
With enough requests either on this thread or the previous Boone thread I would be willing to set this event up for Feb.20th, Feb.27th or Mar.5th. should the weather cooperate.

    Thanks for trying Ron.

I'm game, whenever the conditions allow!

I'm good for two of your three dates.  Can't make it the 20th.  The ice is awful today.  Just made three trips to the shed and now need to get firewood.  Each trip is an adventure.

I agree Ed, the ice is bad again today.  Had to be out really early this morning.  Driving wasn't to bad but walking was almost impossible on untreated surfaces like my sidwalk when I got home.  Also Ron, those wonderful weather forecasters are calling for another major snow storm this coming Thursday, 2/10 so that would definitely be a problem as well.

There is already a DVOA event scheduled for Mar 5 at Nolde -- plus Fair Hill on Sunday.

As for that upcoming storm, let's all pray for rain -- and only rain!

RAIN?!? Rain is a four letter word around here! I might have to delete your post for inappropriate languageLaughing

Nolde is an instructional program with only a white course afterward.  Boone would not include a white.  No problems with the date.

Guy, I don't want rain.  With all this frozen snow, a good foot with almost an inch of ice on top, rain would just run off and create flooding in the roads.  Then it freezes and what a mess that would be.  NO rain.  I'm not sure I want more snow just yet but after what I heard on the news tonight, come the latter part of this week we are mostly likely not going to get a choice on that either.  Suppositively more snow is coming and possible another big dumping at that.  Remember all of those winters we had recently where there was no snow and on the warmer side, I'm thinking we are making up for those winter now.

Janet, if it wasn't for all the snow on the ground, I would agree with you, but right now there is just nowhere to put more snow!  Rain would melt the ice and much of the snow, depending on duration.  Flooding could be reduced by clearing snow from catch basins (storm sewers).  And, oh yeah, you probably would not miss another day of work.

As I see it, the reason why almost everybody around here has hated this winter is because it has been so relentless.  Even the prevous "bad" winter of 1995-96 had periods of thawing between some of the big storms.  We just haven't caught any breaks this season.  We are due.

Kent, it is my understanding that Vermont has seen below average snowfall this season.  We would gladly send some of ours up there if we could.

BTW, how do VTers spell "snow" to keep it from being a 4-letter word?  "Sno", "snowe" or "snough"?  Cool

We had a rather slow start, but it's been piling up pretty good the last couple of weeks. We have about 2 feet of snow cover now and are supposed to pick up another 8"-12" overnight. Right now (10:00pm) we're having a thunderstorm! The conditions for X-C skiing and snowshoeing are excellent! For downhill skiers, all the mountains are in great shape. Stowe has been having excellent conditions, so people should jump on the Junior's fundraiser asap!

Well, except for a little nuisance storm tonight into tomorrow, it looks like clear sailing for the next 10-days:

I guess that 1-2 ft snowstorm originally forecast for this Thursday went poof!

No need to argue over whether rain or snow is better -- I think we can all agree that dry & sunny beats both!   Cool

The issue with this wekend is not how much of either rain or snow  might have come but the hard frozen ice on top of the existing snow base. The next three days are not going to see temperatures above freezing at Boone.  The snow at this moment ( 7:20 p.m. on Tue the 8th ) has a frozen solid surface and not about to improve before Sat. afternoon and then refreeze again overnight.
All this aside, this event will happen only if enough people sign in here on the e-board ahead of time or send me an e-mail of your intention to attend..............at alliron69@cs.com.
This event is a multiple choice of controls with 30 total being set. You can see that I need you to motivate me to go out and set the controls, some of which may not see any visitors.
Let's cross our fingers and hope Mother nature sees fit to let us enjoy her wonderful winter creations.
There are currently ten people who said they will attend. We need to get to twenty to amp up the fun factor.
