Topic created by browne on Mon Mar 19, 2012 at 2:39 pmA minor posting (in the global sense), but one that means a lot to: me. I'm not joining DVOA for the 2012 season. The body doesn't do what I tell it to do, and the brain is one big hairball. So I'm sending in my epunch. Over 30+ years I've met so many wonderful people in orienteering - DVOA and all over North America. Memories that will never be lost: pouring rain, snowstorms, West Point cliffs, sprints to the finish, waiting at the start line, etc. And having the honor, if not the success, of competing with Andy Gagarin and Ruth Johnson who showed us all what excellence and consistency look like in the later years. So goodbye. It's been one heluva ride.

Reply by wilburdeb on Mon Mar 19, 2012 at 2:55 pmSay it aint so, Jim! I am glad I had the honor to meet one of Orienteerings great competitors and boosters. Our club needs a Hall of Fame as you would be a member in grand standing. As your body and mind see fit, I hope to see you in the future either at an O event or the summer/winter meeting.

Reply by Steve on Mon Mar 19, 2012 at 6:51 pmJim Browne has a legecy that goes beyond chasing flags in the woods. In my time, Jim was the one who got HR training off the ground and well on it's way to being an institution. I wonder how many Orienteers call that weekend thier babtism? I do, for it was a scout troop weekend in 93 that I started with this crazy passion. Fare thee well Mr. Browne, you will be missed, but not forgotten. Dan's Idea for a HOF should be taken seriously, with your name right after Kent and Caroline.

Reply by johncampbell on Tue Mar 20, 2012 at 2:41 pmJim, I cannot believe my eyes reading your note - this is a sad state of affairs indeed - the lack of your prescence at DVOA events will be sorely missed. I have fabulous memories of your kindness giving me rides to A events and the wonderful conversations we had about numerous topics including orienteering. Your interest in Alison and Heather's progress in the world of O was also really appreciated - I am happy to say Alison is loving being at Heriot-Watt Univ in Edinburgh where she has the opportunity to learn different terrain and have stiff competition each event.
Hopefully we will see you come out to some sunny event even if just for a chat. Keep in touch and keep the 'hairball brain active"
Best wishes John and family -
Reply by cmarcus on Fri Mar 30, 2012 at 9:26 amJim, I'll really miss you. I have loved spending time with you in and out of the woods. You have been and still are a bright light for me, a few years ahead of me, saying, hey, if I can do it, you can do it. Thank you for your many kindnesses. Carl
