Thank you everyone who came to run the courses at Tamanend 2 weeks ago! And a special thanks to everyone who ran the crazy trail-less course 3!
Big thanks to Kathy Urban for getting us a permission for the event, and for maintaining a good relationship with the park, so that we can keep coming back to run in these fun woods!
A special, huge thank you to Svetlana and Nikolay Frolenko -- they showed up early and taught orienteering to a big group of newbies, including a bunch of kids of various ages. The newbies couldn't have asked for better, more competent and patient teachers; the newbies all crushed the white course, and then promptly moved up to a sprint. Olga Baranova and Sam Kolins then walked the sprint with the group, making sure they kept learning, had fun, and didn't die in the woods.
Mark Masalkov also did his share of beginner instruction, explaining the process to a 6-year-old brand new orienteer!
Dave Morgan and Victor Frolenko were the first ones there and last ones to leave. They helped me set up the event, and then took care of everything in the first half of the event -- Dave managed check-ins, and Victor took care of the computer. Both then stayed there for the whole event, working on just about everything -- Victor walked a course with two newbies, took another shift at the computer, and then picked up controls; Dave ran his course, then came back to handle the last wave of check-ins, and finally sorted and packed up gear.
Bob Fink also stayed back to do control pick up. That was huge help because we only had 3 control-picker-upers, and there was no way we would have gotten out of the woods before the storm if even one of them decided to bail.
Big thanks to Sam Kolins for mapping the park, and for making two special versions of the map for this event -- the simplified white-course map for the kids, and the trail-less map for course 3! Sam also walked a group of excited newbies on one of the sprints, and picked up controls.
