Thank you everyone who showed up to compete at Tyler! The preparation for the event was a bit crazy at times, but seeing all your happy faces totally made it worth it all the work!

Huge thanks to Mary Frank for all her work as the Event Director. Getting the park permit during covid times was quite an adventure. Mary also put in a ton of work into Girl Scout outreach, and even taught a virtual Zoom training class for the girls and scout leaders. She drove the kit around, set up the check-in in the morning and then managed it all day; Mary also herded scouts throughout the event, then did pickup, and was the last person to leave the park after sorting and packing up all the gear (and she still found time to beat Mark on Brown along the way!)

The event would not have happened without Bob Burg’s work to produce the awesome super-detailed map!

Sam Kolins did a ton of map updates, provided feedback on the courses, helped me hang controls, set up the computer, assigned epunches, and then managed the computer and download all day during the event.

Mark Frank and Ron Barron woke up at an ungodly hour to hang all the beginner controls before everyone else got to the park.

Pat and Bob Burton, Mark Frank, Corinne and Kirsten Mayland provided instruction to all the scouts and other new orienteers all day (to say that that there was a lot of instruction needed would be an understatement. This was a super-demanding job at this event).

Corinne and Kirsten also took over from me at map distribution at the end of the day.

Ron Cook and Mark Kern helped manage the onslaught of scouts and other orienteers checking in at this sold out event.

Jim Puzo helped with set-up, took pictures, and managed start all day (Pat and Bob Burton offered to work start, but at that point I still had the illusion that I could handle the start by myself. Spoiler alert – I couldn’t :-D But there was so much help needed with instruction, that it was a good thing that Pat and Bob took over that job)

Dave Morgan helped with setup and then stuck around to manage the finish-to-download chute after his course.

John Hixson helped at check-in all day, then later at download, and also helped sorting and packing up gear.

The control pickup crew was Kevin Baldauf, Bob Burg, John Hixson, Mary and Robert Frank, and Sam Kolins. If any one of these people didn’t offer help, we would not have made it out of the park before sunset!

    Special thanks go to:

    - Oriana, who took a lot of time on her course to help out a struggling new orienteer and to make sure she had a great first orienteering experience.

    - Steve Mones who somehow magically found another orienteer’s lost wallet on the course (a brown wallet, on the brown leafy ground, in thick and thorny woods – definitely magic!)

    - An unknown person that fixed control 82 that got knocked over by wind and falling branches overnight.

Thank you everyone for the great start of the season, and hope to see you all at the next event!

Thank you to all for a  wonderful almost-spring day in the woods.  Your hard work is definitely appreciated.
