This event is being staged out of the fairgrounds.  Parking is in the grassy area just south of Rt. 273.  Registration will be in the Stafford Pavilion in the fairgrounds.  There is a short walk to the Start from the pavilion – follow streamers.  The map fee covers the park entrance fee – no additional fees will be collected at Registration.

It’s been a few years since we’ve held an event on the Big Elk Chapel map.  Since then, there have been a significant number of new and modified trails.  The map has been revised to update trails in the areas covered by the courses.  Unless used for a control site, rootstocks on the map are very unreliable.  Many of the old mapped rootstocks are no longer visible and there are a large number of new ones.  The map has not been updated to reflect changes to rootstocks.  Some of the horse jumps in the open fields have been moved and are no longer in locations shown on the map.

As always at Fair Hill, you may encounter horses on trails.  Always announce your presence well in advance and give them plenty of space if you pass them.

Advanced courses are a bit longer than normal due to moderate climb and some “dead running” on trails or though fields.

Sunset is at 4:50 pm.  Control pick-up will begin no later than 3:00 pm.  If you expect to take several hours to complete your course, please start by noon.  Otherwise, the controls may be collected before you finish.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR GREEN, RED, BLUE:  There is a long leg on these courses where the straight line traverses an area currently under construction for a stream stabilization project.  The construction area has been marked with red slashing on the map and is OUT OF BOUNDS.  You must take routes to the left or right to avoid this area.  Any runners caught crossing the out of bounds area will be disqualified.

We hope you enjoy the event!

FYI, I have read several unofficial reports from trail riders in the last two weeks of vehicles being broken into and wallets and credit cards stolen. (Unofficial as in, I have not confirmed this with park staff or police.) It sounds like either locksmith tools are being used or someone is lurking nearby with a device that catches and duplicates keyless entry signals, as in some cases there was no visible damage and the trucks were still locked, but items gone. The reports I saw were for the Appleton lot and the 273 lot which is across from where we will be. It might be good to be extra wary and leave unnecessary valuables at home.
