Lucky Seven Rogaine update
-
Topic created by brambles6 on Wed Jun 7, 2017 at 9:48 pmThe good news is that the rogaine will have 50 controls (for the 50th anniversary). The not so good news is that not all of us have epunches that can handle 50 controls. Most of the older epunches can only manage 30. We suspect that those will be adequate for the 6 hour rogaine but the 12 hour folks will probably need the extra slots. For those that need them, we have arranged for epunches that can be loaned for a refundable deposit. The registration form has a Note field to handle this.

Reply by Sandy on Thu Jun 8, 2017 at 7:24 pmAll of the SI cards out there - including the one embedded in a compass - work with our equipment. You just need to lay the compas over the hole in the SI control unit.
There is one caveat and that is that unless the controls are programmed in "beacon" mode, the new SIAC cards have to actually be inserted in the holes. If the controls are programmed to be in beacon mode then the SIAC cards only have to get within about a foot or so of the control. But the non-SIAC cards still work in the controls if you insert them. We will be testing out the beacon mode at Norristown this coming Wednesday. -
Reply by ErikEddy on Wed Jun 14, 2017 at 3:20 pmhope to be able to try this out if there are some loaners. Besides sprint (where every second counts), the beacon mode would be really beneficial for mountain bike orienteering so you don't have to get off your bike quite as much. And those no-punch timing start/finish gates would be awesome for orienteering in general. Anyone ever been in an event with a timing gate?
Seems like the actual timing sticks are the biggest cost/barrier at full scale use at $80/unit.... -
Reply by Sandy on Wed Jun 14, 2017 at 10:23 pmEd Despard of CSU (Boston area) has been experimenting with timing gates and using the SIAC cards. There is a ski-o IOF sanctioned world cup event and world masters championship scheduled for next year in Vermont where these types of upgrades are expected and probably required.
