    Adopt a 2017 Event - 50 for 50th

Just one event each.  Some park you'd love DVOA to use/revive and not have to cancel like too many this past year. Take ownership of an event in 2017.  Just one.

Drawn more to Event Directing or Course Setting?  A number of DVOA veterans can coach you and help gather a support team and find a partner. Work with Ed Scott to help you find a good date and help Mary Frank get the permit approved.

We also have veterans who only occasionally run an event. Let's make it one this next year.

We have those who have frequently run events over the years, burned out and temporarily retired. Please come back and lend your expertise for just one event.

Own one event for our 50th year and see us flourish. Assisting, invaluably running the e-system, and bring a friend to an event.

Can we reach 50?  Who knows?  But worst case scenario, we host a lot more events in 2017.

    Who's game?

Yes, there were years when we had 50 or more events.  1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007.  Our biggest year was 2005 with 67 events.  We used to have lots of well publicized instructional events that were advertised and open to the public. Often just a White Yellow & Orange or just a Score O.  Those would be on Saturdays and hopefully near the location of the Sunday event.  I think this is one of the very few areas that Epunch has hurt us.  Most anyone can set and administer a simple pin punch event alone or with a minimum of help, but going full epunch for a lot of the membership is beyond their comfort level.  Until we get the younger crowd to move into the event administration and promotional roles we will likely continue to have 30-40 events a year.  This year wil be especially challenging with 2 National level events scheduled in the NE, plus it being the year that the weekends of The Mid Atlantics and the Dual event with HVO are both "away".

Dave and I will be away for a lot of February and March, but for most of the year, count me in.  We should simplify event directing and course setting -- it's a lot of responsibility.  I don't agree with Ed that epunch is responsible for the decline in the number of events, and now there are 3 kits.  The new check list is a big help, but it shows how much work is involved in an event.  BTW, If all the events that Mary does were on the schedule, we might be much closer to 50 events!
Finally, we need something newsworthy to say about the 50th anniversary in a press release.  Ideas?

Although I love e-punch, and split times and instant results, I still use pin punch on all of my WY events. I am not sure why that would scare people away from being an ED. I do agree that using two e-punch kits in one weekend makes it hard on the ED for the next week.

I apologize if I miss speak...Possibly the Executive committee and/or Board are working on a series of items for the 50th but at present I am unware of any organized formal plan.  I like this thread though...and think if nothing formal is going on we should form a 50th anniversary "work" group to plan out the year, seek out addtional volunteers and spread the work... and make 2017 a truely "GOLDEN VOLUNTEER YEAR" for the club.  Make our schedule next year one that would make the Ringos and other early founding members proud!   Count me in.

To be an "event" it should be open to the public and have results published and scored for rankings purposes. When this happens the data goes on our OUSA record and helps determine our yearly dues to the national effort. Some educational programs could become events with very little extra work, but those done for specific groups should not be included in the yearly totals.

Does that mean a score-o at the Willows or a rogaine or a w-y with pin punch is Not an "event"? I suggest we could have a full schedule if we redefine "event". I suggest that if we can print it on the schedule, it's an event, even if we have to call it something else for OUSA reporting purposes.

Yes if it is open to the public and results are recorded.  If I set a course for a scout troop I don't expect it to be counted as an event.
