Father's Day at Col. Denning SP

Topic created by robw on Sat Jun 11, 2016 at 6:59 pmFathers, and anyone else who likes to orienteer in open woods, should head west next Sunday for an SVO event. Col. Denning is a small park with adjacent state forest located northwest of Carlisle, Pa. It is off Pa Rt. 233, 13 miles north of exit 37 of I-78. (This is the same exit that most use to go to Pine Grove Furnace SP.) Most people have probably only been there for the Mid-Atlantic Champoinships held there in November of 2013. The amazing thing is that the woods are almost as open and free of undergrowth now as they were then. There are areas of deadfall and stony ground, but little of the ferns and briers currently prevalent on most DVOA maps. On the other hand, there is significant climb on all courses, except White, but it has been held to under 5%. There will be regular e-punching, thanks to DVOA loaning their red e-punch kit for the event. White and yellow courses will use a 1:7,500 scale map, while other courses using a 1:10,000 map, with both maps having 5m. contours. Registration is open the normal times of 10 AM to 1 PM.Consider bringing your swimsuits, as there is a swimming area and sandy beach at the small lake on the other side of the parking lot from registration, start and finish. A great way to cool off after finishing your course.Warning for those who might consider getting to the park from the north by using Pa Rt. 850 from Marysville on the west bank of the Susquehanna River. US Rts. 11-15 is closed between I-78 and Marysville.

Reply by robw on Sun Jun 12, 2016 at 7:24 pmThere is a typo in the directions posted. They should refer to I-81 rather than I-78. Thanks to John Ort for catching my mistake.

Reply by edscott on Sat Jun 18, 2016 at 9:52 amI can't be there this weekend, but I recommend this map and terrain. It is well worth the drive out into Susquehanna Valley territory.

Reply by chand on Mon Jun 20, 2016 at 7:13 amThe woods were as white as advertised. Most excellent. Great place to practice pace counting at different inclines. One place on the map had a single green dot which I managed to find (I had gone too far). I was glad it was mapped.
Woods were very quiet - hardly saw anyone. Only exception was listening to Marco! Polo! Marco! Polo! for a few minutes ascending the woods northwest of the lake.
