2016 MASOC

Topic created by edscott on Fri May 13, 2016 at 10:23 pmThe results from last Saturday are all recorded. The detailed data will be at www.scoutorienteering.com. We had 470 participants with over half of them on one of the 2 white courses. The winning Boy Scout time on Orange would have won on Sunday. We used epunch for the first time for the regular leaders course and on the Orange & Brown courses. Need to refine our process for team scoring, but all in all it was a success. Thanks to all our volunteers. MASOC requires a lot of preparation and day-of-event workers, but introducing this many young men and women to Orienteering in a single day is worth the effort.

Reply by Steve on Sat May 14, 2016 at 5:37 pmAlthough 470 sounds like a good turnout, MASOC veterns will agree that the numbers are declining. Was there a schedule conflict this year (like Mother's Day) or is there a different reason for the loss? Masoc has always been such a great event, and Erik is not the only one that became hooked there. I would hate to see this trend continue.

Reply by edscott on Sat May 14, 2016 at 6:49 pmYes, our turnout was below average and Mothers Day could have an effect on attendance. We have kept it the first Saturday in May regardless of the date for Mothers Day to avoid confusion. Many troops plan their year at summer camp so the date does need to be known well in advance. For it to fall on Mothers Day weekend May 1 has to be a Sunday. Our Mothers Day Weekend MASOC events were in 1994 (438 attending), 2005 (753 attending), 2011 (461 Attending) and 2016 (470 Attending) Our over all average attendance is 606, and our Mothers Day weekend average is 530. I suspect the weather forecast for the weekend had as large an effect as the date. Although most troops that had pre-registered came, many were missing a number of their registered teams. The final numbers and winning units will be added to this page soon. http://www.scoutorienteering.com/downloads/masoc_history.pdf]Just sorted out the troop data and have the troop trophies sitting here ready to be boxed and shipped this week.
