Invitation to “The Art of Course Setting”
Annual Winter Meeting – 30 Jan 16
Want to improve your orienteering skills? Curious about how good courses are designed? Vaguely interested in perhaps trying your hand at it? Designed courses for a recent event and would like to improve your skills? One of DVOA’s best course setters who would like to add your voice to ours?
All of the above are enthusiastically invited to pool your passion and experiences to ensure that DVOA events sustain the excellence that we have become nationally known for.
Erik Eddy and I (and hopefully several of our most veteran course setters) will be hosting a 2 hour training at the Winter Meeting this Saturday focused on “The Art of Course Setting.” We hope a big crowd shows up to learn everything you didn’t know you wanted to know about designing courses, as well as to help sustain DVOA’s tradition of excellent course design, the lifeblood of our sport.
Years ago, 15 months after discovering orienteering, I attended a course setting training at my second annual Winter Meeting that Eric Weyman conducted. I showed up simply because I wanted to soak up everything I could about this sport that had claimed my athletic heart. Little did I know that designing courses would become perhaps my favorite orienteering activity. Maybe you will catch the bug, maybe you’ll simply learn a lot about what makes for good courses…and good orienteering. Whatever your interest, please join us to explore the basics and learn from real-life examples of how a set of courses that challenge and delight you are designed.
Check the Winter Meeting's website posting for exact hours and training outline. Continue to enjoy our record-setting snow weekend, and come to hang with your O-family next Saturday, as well as enjoying next Sunday’s President’s Cup (that has an interesting twist dear to this course setter’s heart).

Reply by ErikEddy on Wed Jan 27, 2016 at 9:26 amIt is most likely the Sunday event this will get cancelled. While maybe you could get buy on snowshoes, all of the stakes are buried so setting up would be tough...just not good conditions. We will confirm soon.

Sorry to dissapoint those of you who might have wanted to try snowshoe-O.One issue is that only the white stakes are out, no surveyor ribbon hung above the control location. The snow on the ground makes it a challenge for the course setter to get to the control locations, as well as covering the stake.Nancy Sharp, President
