Hi everyone.  Well, Washington Crossing preparation is getting down to its last-week homestretch.  And with the numbers we’re expecting (e.g. one JROTC unit is bringing 132 cadets, another unit is shuffling in from Buffalo, yes, as in NY) we can use all the help we can get….from Registration to Instruction and Parking, Start to Pick-Up.  You name it, briefly or extended.  Last year’s attendance totaled around 600, and we’re expecting more than that this year.  And if you volunteer, you get to run your course for free! 

 

WashCrsg with its encroaching green (especially of the bramble variety) is a real course setting challenge.  But somehow, I’m delighted how the courses came out, using some of the very best terrain with wise route choice definitely rewarded.  If you find yourself mired in stickers, you’re either off-course or have just chosen a discouraging route option.

 

I’m especially pleased with the longish Red course – it took several generations and field work revisions to get it right.  But for those who like to stretch their legs out, I’ll be interested in hearing your feedback.  And of course, Brown and Green share many of the same controls and terrain. 

 

So whether you can help out or not, please come out to the autumnal splendor of Washington Crossing in mid-October (with leaves just changing color) and run a course…..and drink in the enthusiasm of 500-600 scouts and cadets.  The place was really hopping last year!

For those members who have never traveled to Washington's Crossing for some reason this is a map you should experience. Bob Burg has been working to update the map and I believe it is our best terrain in NJ with little rock, a great trail network and just enough contour relief to enjoy changing elevation without becoming to physical. This is a great event and a great chance to help support the development or youth in our sport.  I am looking forward to event and hope you can come and help or just come and experience Washington's Crossing. Hope to see as many members there as possible and wear your DVOA suit or shirt if you have one.

Great Fall weather (sun and high 50's by afternoon), hundreds of scouts and cadets running around, Start times extended till at least 1:30 (free for volunteer help), what's not to like about hiking over to New Jersey this Saturday and welcoming the official meteorological start to Autumn in changing colors.
