Topic created by Nancy on Sat May 30, 2015 at 9:04 pmDVOAers Sharon Siegler, Steve Aronson, Petr Hartman, Ralph Tolbert and I staffed a stand to promote orienteeering in the Lehigh Valley at an event designed to introduce people to the many ways to experience the outdoors in the Lehigh Valley. We were amidst fly fishermen, disc golfers, hikers and bikers, to name a few of the many activities represented. Thanks to all of you for spending the day talking about orienteering. This was a great venue to introduce people to orienteering, especially right at the foot of our Star Village (South Mountain) map. Petr created a map and white course in the area of the SteelStacks complex (a portion of the former Bethlehem Steel compoound). On Day One of the two-day event, we spoke to more than 100 people about orienteering and had several dozen out on the course. A few of the people we spoke to were already familiar with orienteering but most of them had never heard of it before. We hope to see many of these people out in the woods in the Lehigh Valley. The course went past a giant rubber duckie and almost through a wedding ceremony (luckily, Petr hadn't tucked a control into the courtyard where the outdoor wedding took place). Before we left for the day, we heard from the organizers that they plan to hold the event next year. Based on our interactions today, i would say DVOA plans to participate again next year.
