ED/CS Notes:
Control Pickup will begin at 2:45.
For those who want a second course there is a 2.1km sprint available. It can be done mostly on trails with lots of route choice options, including some through the woods. If you are registered for a standard course, there is no charge or pre-registration needed for the sprint.
Terrain and Course Notes
Iron was last produced here by the Thomas Iron Company circa 1920, so time and nature have reclaimed all but the most durable artifacts: concrete and stone foundations, and piles of slag (the waste products from iron production). Subsequent human use has resulted in a significant trail network.
Courses are on the short side since the area is quite small. Maps will be printed at 1:5000, except for the Brown course which is at 1:4000. Contour interval is 2.5m. The Green course will have a map flip. Orange, Brown and Green courses cross over themselves many times, so make sure you visit controls in order, and of course you'll want to check control codes.Petr Hartman has recently updated the map, but understory vegetation had a very good summer, so you may find some areas significantly slower than other similarly mapped areas. The culprit is most often Japanese stilt grass, forming thick grassy mats which are slow to move through and obscure deadfall. Some things to be aware of:- There are no large hills, but slopes can be steep and if they are on slag piles they can be quite loose and slippery. Be careful, especially heading downhill.- Small areas of stinging nettles exist (there used to be more but the stilt grass took over). They may not be an issue in early November.- Some of the lesser used trails may be harder to see. Those mapped as indistinct will offer easier routes through vegetation if you find them.- The "broken ground" symbol appears in several areas of the map (small brown dots - like rocky ground but brown rather than black). This symbol is used to show piles of dirt, asphalt, etc. which have been dumped here. Note that these piles may be more prominent than mapped dot knolls.
