Batsto was scheduled for 15 March 2020, course maps printed and ready to go, then we went into covid lockdown, Batsto being the very first event we canceled. Frown While NJ State Parks re-opened to the public, they were not entertaining special group events so we re-scheduled Batsto again, and then again. And finally, just this Monday, we got official approval to orienteer on Dec 5th. Hallelujah
Some of you may remember that a large wildfire occurred at Batsto in 2018, which rangers in a stroke of genius turned into a massive controlled burn, opening up large eastern swaths of our map for the first time since the map debuted in 2006. Everyone who attended our event in 2019 got to enjoy wonderfully open woods where tall (3-4-5 feet high) dense groundcover had always existed. As the Batsto mapper, I was likely the first orienteer to ever see the ground in many of those areas.
And luckily pineland vegetation grows slowly, so Dec 5 we will once again enjoy extensive white woods while they last. In the 3 years since the fire, groundcover is definitely re-establishing itself, but it still grows slowly enough that by pineland standards virtually all of the burn area is still quite runnable white woods. So we heartily invite everyone to come out to the unique and beautiful gently rolling terrain of the pinelands at Batsto’s runnable best.
Advanced courses will definitely favor those who discern subtle contour and vegetation features and choose routes accordingly. While the option lasts, advanced runners won’t need to run to the closest trail like we did in the past. Abundant cross-country route choices in the pinelands?! What a concept!
We will really appreciate anyone who shows up to help before going out on a course, or runs their course first and helps out after finishing. It takes a village to run an event, especially one approved less than 2 weeks before the event. Cool
We will not have water out on the courses, so plan accordingly.
And ANY GROUP (e.g. JROTC Units), please contact Bob as soon as possible with estimated numbers on which courses (even before registering) so that we’ll have sufficient lead time next week to print additional maps as they may be needed. We welcome you with open arms….or at least very friendly fist bumps. Laughing
