Notes: DVOA summer picnic.
ED/CS Notes:
The DVOA Summer Picnic, a potluck affair, will be at Fort Washington State Park on Saturday, June 18th. The picnic will start promptly at 12:30 followed shortly thereafter by the summer club meeting. There will be a special relay prior to the picnic and meeting, details are:
No money can be collected at this park for orienteering events. Instead we will give pre addressed envelopes to mail in the entry fees. We will keep track of who sends their fees in. There is a rumor that a club member may be willing to collect the envelopes to mail in all at once. The relay will consist of two person teams completing two courses printed on one map. One yellow level course will be 3.1 km with 55 m climb and 9 controls, the other course will be 4.28 km with 130 m climb and 13 controls and will have orange level difficulty. There will be 3 common controls spread evenly throughout both courses and runners will be given clue sheets (as well as clue sheets printed on the maps). Each team must present two e-punches at the finish with the courses completed in order (one with the orange course and the other with the yellow course). Cell phones can be used by teams to communicate with each other (talk and text only, no transmission of map images). This relay can also be an exercise in memory orienteering. Other creative ways of completing the courses are allowed as well.To make things even more complicated: if one of the team members of the relay has never been orienteering before, 40 minutes will be taken from the teams time. If a team member is younger than 14 or older than 70 or has only started orienteering in 2011 then 20 minutes will be removed from their time. If a team member is older than 55 then 10 minutes will be removed. And for all of the speed demons that will be tearing up the course: 30 minutes will be added if they have been ranked in the top ten for DVOA in the last 5 years, 20 minutes will be added if ranked in the top 20 and 10 minutes for a top 30 ranking for the last 5 years. Thanks to Kent Shaw we will have your number. The starts will be at intervals beginning at 10 am and finishing at 11:30 am. No starts will be allowed after that time. In addition, no teams are allowed to help one another. That would defeat the fun of the relay.Come with a partner or come alone and we will help you find one and bring your favorite dish for sharing at the picnic. Everyone is responsible for their own drinks and utensils. We hope to see you there.Karl and Sandy Ahlswede
