ED/CS Notes:

FDR might be the most unique venue in our catalogue of maps – especially during summer weekends.  And given FDR’s ambitious re-design of the entire property, I’ve just recently completed revising the park in preparation for our event.  So come enjoy our 2 Short Courses and Brown course in Philadelphia’s urban heartland.

As you run courses you’ll pass by music of all sorts (though no classical chamber music) as well as Asian and Latino Markets, so after the event you can please whichever your ethnic palette prefers.  Also I invite everyone to visit the new state-of-the-art playground – mapped as out-of-bounds on courses, right across from our Staging Area, in the far SW corner of the Swedish Museum’s large parking lot – where I routinely see adults enjoying it as much as their kids. [Note: I do suggest driving into the park at the western-most entrance on Pattison.]

On your courses you’ll need to navigate a number of unmapped features, i.e. summertime picnics and traffic. But I’ve designed the courses to avoid the busiest areas so you might even find your course(s) reasonably bucolic.  Both short courses are a combination of White and Yellow navigation, while the Brown (visitng all corners of the map including all four of the smallish wooded areas) will require some advanced navigation, but no elite athleticism.

See you all on the 17th.

Special Notes  Because of the detail of this urban park, the Short Courses will be printed at 1:3000 scale, the Brown course at 1:4000 scale. So everyone will need to use a separate clue sheet which you can get at sign in (and if needed, a legend).

Also since FDR has added lots of small patches as well as large areas of garden, the map will use a non-standard garden symbol rather than simply dark olive.

And because a couple wanting to attend their first orienteering event contacted us, we will be offering a truly White course for them. So if you know anyone who might be overwhelmed with an Adanced Beginner course (i.e. the standard Short Course), we're printing several White maps. Just have them Pre-Reg for a Short Course, and we will sort it out at the event.
