Come out and have fun at our late summer orienteering event on the water at Marsh Creek State Park – the DVOA Marsh Creek Lake H2”O” canoe/kayak orienteering event, Sunday, September 10, 2023! Start times are between 10:00am and 11:30am. Event Director: Bob Agosta; Course Setter: Ron Barron.

Teams of 2 as well as soloists will hunt down upwards to 25 control locations that will be located along the shoreline of 550-acre Marsh Creek Lake and the immediate surrounding woods. This will be a Rogaine style event, meaning controls will have different values depending on how close to the start/finish they are or how difficult they will be to get to.

We will be offering two different timed event durations: 2-hour and 3-hour. Marsh Creek Watersports will be outfitting us with boats, PFD’s and paddles, for those that need to rent a boat. They have mostly tandem and solo kayaks, but a handful of canoes will also be available. You may also provide your own kayak or canoe. (Sorry, no row boats or paddle boards).

The navigation will not be difficult for the most part but strategy will be critical to attain a high score. There should be only a little bush-whacking through the woods. All controls are optional. There will not be any set course. Teams will be allowed to split up if they choose (land and water), which should make for some interesting strategies. Teams must finish together in their boat. While solo participants are allowed, should you want to compete on a team but need help finding a team-mate, please reach out to Bob Agosta or Ron Barron.

Everyone MUST have a map. We are also encouraging the use of SI “Air” chips to make it easier to punch from the boat at water controls. The Club has a limited supply of “Air” chips available to rent. You will have an option to select this during the registration process.

We will be set up beyond the parking lots and boat rental building, on the left. Next to a big lake:) There is plenty of room to picnic after the event.

The map is 1:15,000 with 2-meter contours, and was last used for a GOALS Savage Adventure Race in 2021. While we expect to be able to waterproof the maps, you will want some means of having it available to you during the race, while paddling. Many people use a case with straps that hang from their neck, but invention is always appropriate.

We recommend wearing shoes that are captive to your feet. Flip-flops could be a problem. Longer pants are also recommended as they provide excellent sun protection while in a kayak or canoe. Both will be helpful should you hike to a control.

Registration cost is $18 for a 2-person team, including an “Air” chip ($13 if you use your own “Air” chip); $15 for solo competitors, including an “Air” chip ($10 if you use your own “Air” chip).

Boats will be available to rent directly from Marsh Creek Watersports on the day of the event at a discounted rate to our club, for those registered for the event.

$70 for a 3-hour tandem kayak or canoe; $55 for a 2-hour tandem kayak or canoe; $60 for a 3-hour solo kayak; and $50 for a 2-hour solo kayak.
