ED/CS Notes:
*PA TURNPIKE ALERTFor those travelling to the event viat the Northeast Extension, note the following closure north of Allentown:DVOA EVENT Hickory Run Course Notes 9/8/19Seven courses are offered at this event: white, yellow, orange, brown, green, red and blue. The white and yellow courses stay near the Camp Daddy Allen campground and will use a map with a 1:5,000 scale and 5 m. contours. Starts for white and yellow will be by the infirmary building about 100 m. southeast of the dining hall. All other courses use the Sand Spring Lake map (1:10,000; 5 m.), with starts approximately a 1.0 km walk from the dining hall, at the junction of the park road leading to Sand Spring Lake and the road to Camp Daddy Allen. All courses finish at the front of the dining hall.Hickory Run has always been one of the more interesting areas for orienteering in DVOAland. There are many subtle contour features and few trails or other linear features except around the campground areas such as Daddy Allen. As of one week before the event, many small streams, marshes and ponds are dry and less visible than mapped. That could change if there is significant rainfall in the days before the event. For example, some of the mapped small ponds used as control locations may look more like depressions with some muddy areas. Dark green usually means rhododendron, which should be avoided. Medium green shows mountain laurel, through which some deer trails can be found, and otherwise can be passed through with varying degrees of difficulty. Light green denotes some sapling growth, which affects visibility. Some of the mapped stone walls are no longer full height, but are visible as a wide line of stones. Mapped contour and rock features are generally reliable, but vegetation, in a few places, can be a bit thicker than mapped. The courses have normal lengths and climb, but the challenging terrain makes it unadvisable to move up from your normal course level, unless you feel your learned a lot at Saturday’s training event and wish to try out your new-found skills. All courses, except white, have water jugs and cups at one or more control locations, (please use the cups and do not drink directly from the jugs), but there will also be water by bridge crossings over Hickory Run which may be used by those on the orange, green, red and blue courses. As noted in the registration materials, starts will close earlier than usual, noon instead of 1 pm, so that the campground area can be cleaned up and workers, some of whom have been there all weekend, can head home at a reasonable time. Control pickup will begin no later than 2:30 pm.Yellow course - the 2nd control is shown as the end of a fence, but there is no fencing, only several fence poles, with the control by the last post.White course - the 1st control is mapped as a well, but it actually is a water fountain.
