Event Director:
Course Setter: Samuel Kolins and see choices to Volunteer to help at this event 🙏
Notes: Indoor beginner program from 10-11 AM with time to do a course afterward. This is an SVO Event that counts for DVOA rankings. Event Director to be determined by SVO.
ED/CS Notes:
Registration is on the porch of the environmental center, right next to the parking lot. The start is in the pavilion also adjacent to the parking lot.
Some courses have route choices that take you back into the environmental center area. For safety reasons, the parking lot itself is marked as out of bounds on the map. However, you are welcome to use the grassy areas around the parking lot and you may cross the driveway between the main road and the parking lot. There is one trail on the map next to the start that is badly overgrown and x’ed out on the map.
Possible route choices use trails that go through the rocky green terrain near the environmental center. Some of these trails can be hard to see on the map due to the surrounding rocks, so a blank map with the trails highlighted will be provided at the registration area if you want to review the trail network before starting your course. As in previous years, due to what I think is an issue with the underlying map the overprint on top of the green is not as crisp as usual - sorry.
The courses will spend most of the time in the northern section of the park. This area is composed mainly of hillsides with only a few large terrain features, but many smaller terrain features and lots of charcoal platforms, rocks, and other point features. There is a lot of white woods with good visibility though the travel is slowed in spots by patches of vegetation and moderately rocky ground underfoot. The trails on the maps are pretty clearly visible and blazed. The vegetation mapping is still pretty accurate and rootstocks on the map are still clearly visible in the field. Since the map was made there are a fair number of new unmapped downed trees, drainage ditches, and sign-posts, including a new permanent orienteering course. Light green is generally not too bad to travel through, but the medium green in many places is dense, unpleasant, and slow (though not thorny). Green slash generally means significant thorns, but there is thankfully little of that to deal with in the course areas.
All roads and trails along the edges of the maps are in-bounds. However, there are a number of houses on the edges of the map. Please respect these homeowners by not running through their yards. In most cases you would only run into a yard if you were off course.
RED and BLUE: The red and blue courses will also travel to an area on the south side of the park. This area contains some very large boulders, so the standards for what stony ground and boulders get mapped are very different. I have been surprised by some very large but low boulders that do not make it onto the map. There is also a firing range off the map south of the park, so you may hear some gunshots. However, there is a large power line cut between the park and the range, so there shouldn’t be any risk of accidentally walking into the range. Blue has a couple places where the course crosses itself near a control on the map, so please pay attention to the control numbers.
