ED/CS Notes:
Quail Hill Course 2014 Notes:
Quail Hill adds a $1 surcharge per map above the listed DVOA fees.- The QH camp entrance to parking lot road is crossed by all courses - often more than once - drive with care & cross with care. Early drivers will park in the middle Quail Lots, later arrivals after 11:30 may park in a further lot (a slightly longer walk to start) Follow the DVOA directional signs to parking.
There is some poison ivy scattered about in the deeper grass areas, and in some of the forest - almost always below knee height. There are indoor restrooms with running water & bring your own soap and clean up right next to the QH finish if you are sensitive. Ticks are out. Spray & check! This year the power line along the East edge of map is now a potential route choice like it used to be a few years ago.
Map notes: Be sure to Check the map posted at Registration.
There are several out of bounds areas marked on the map with vertical purple or black overprint. These include some private homes, the camp rifle range and other areas the camp has deemed as out of bounds. 12 or more campsites in the early starts may contain campers and tents which must be avoided. Tents are usually struck just before 11 am so and will not be an issue for later runners. There is a Cub Scout Wagon event in the camp, you can use the main road to bypass this activity but please avoid any small groups of Scout Wagon trains - they are learning new Scout life skills in the field near the Rifle and archery range. On the other hand, the Laser Tag area that we haven't been able to use in over 7 years is now in bounds and the course setter may have you visit this "new" wooded hillside terrain. It adds about 10% more runnable area to this camps turf.
Some of the vegetation details have changed a bit - as happens rather quickly on 1:5000 maps. It has been updated somewhat in the vicinity of the Power Line right of way, and near several potential route choices, but don't expect it to match quite as well as it did in 2012. A new foot bridge has been added to the map. New rootstocks have appeared, and older ones are deteriodrated. Most of the damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy has been cleaned up.
Please remember, Dogs are not allowed in this Private camp.
Have fun, come join in the Map Magic & Fun at Quail Hill #13. Volunteers still needed, especially early trainers. Enjoy - ED, Bob R
