As DVOA’s Autumn season draws to a close, you are warmly invited to orienteer the “wilds” of New Jersey the first Sunday in December on the northern-most map in DVOA NJ captivity. Since last year large additional revised sections have been added to include some of the most intriguing terrain in the Preserve. Certainly I had never seen it before!
And this year we will be using a new staging area (just follow the orange arrows) that offers courses for White, Yellow, Orange, and Brown runners that visit parts of the park you’ve never experienced before. And for Green and Red runners, you could be visiting re-mapped areas that you will not recognize!
Sure, there are lots and lots (and lots) of large new rootstocks (circa Sandy 2012) with their extensive canopies that dot both gently rolling white woods as well as the Preserve’s always dramatic deeply-cut stream-bed terrain – but they only add to the challenge of navigating throughout the park, especially when on cross-terrain legs.
Note that being only 2 weeks from the shortest day of the year, we will close courses and start gathering controls by 2:30pm, so we encourage you to arrive and start your courses just a smidge earlier than usual. I only wish you could have seen the autumnal yellows, oranges, and reds of the Preserve that I’ve witnessed in recent weeks.
In the leaves’ wake, lots of great terrain remain.
So please come join all your DVOA (and HVO, scout and cadet) friends as we move deeper into the holiday season. We promise to spread a lot of orienteering thanksgiving and joy.
