ED/CS Notes:

DVOA invites you to our summer picnic and annual Vice President’s Cup at the beautiful H.E. Myrick Conservation Center of the Brandywine Valley Association.

We will offer a fun orienteering event that has something for all abilities.

The event will be a relay, with three legs, run according to the US Relay Champs points system to determine time “bonuses” for runners.

Those rules are:
  1. Ages 17-20 or 35-49 receives 1 point
  2. Ages 15, 16 or 50-59 receives 2 points
  3. Under 15 years of age or 60 and older receives 3 points
  4. A female orienteer receives 2 points, in addition to any age points.
  5. [ex. 15-year old female = 4 points; 47 year old male = 1 point; 23 year old male = 0 points]
Each point is worth a 4 minute deduction from the time taken on a leg.

So, a team of a M18, an M21, and a F65 would have (1 x 4) + (0 x 4) + (5 x 4) = 24 minutes subtracted from their total time. And so forth.

You are welcome to run the relay as an individual or a team of two, but the same point system applies.

There are three courses: Easy, Medium, and Long, as follows:
  • Easy: 2.1K, 9 controls (white difficulty)
  • Medium: 2.0K, 11 controls (intermediate+ difficulty)
  •  Long: 2.4K, 7 controls (intermediate+ difficulty)
The Medium/Long courses can be completed by an orange runner.

Some of the courses may have “forking”, but everyone will visit the same controls; the order may differ across teams. In other words, Team A may run E, L, M, Team B may run M, E, L, and so forth. One or more of the E, M, L courses may be forked such that there will be a split at some point in the course and some runners will go one direction, and the rest the other, before converging. So, following is OK—but pay attention!

The event will be a mass start, at noon (12:00PM). Teams will do the legs in random order. In other words, at "go" some runners will be on Easy, some Medium, and some Long. The teams will be given their packet of maps before the start, in the order they will run.

Map notes
The map has aged slightly, but is still pretty good. One rough open field has grown in and is overprinted in purple. In addition, some recently planted corn fields are overprinted in purple as well. The outlines of these cultivation areas are indicated by vegetation boundaries on the map. The courses are designed such that runners need not cross the corn fields, but fallow, or recently mowed wheat/hay fields are OK to cross. Please be respectful of the area and do not run in any fields where you might damage crops.

One trail recently had a large downed tree on it which might require some clamboring for runners on several courses. Hopefully it has become more passable.
