ED/CS Notes:

Invitation to Four Mile Circle Easter Saturday – 16 April

In honor of our mascot, anyone have a bunny outfit or rabbit ears they can wear?

We’ll deduct 10 minutes off your time….well, not really.

We are planning to makeEaster Saturday special for everyone, especially families bringing children with them.  For the younger, youngest, and young at heart, ashort 790m Easter Treasure Hunt through the beautiful open woodsencircling our Staging Area. Then a full set of regular courses for everyonethat use terrain most orienteers never get to visit which will challenge allof you.

The map we’ll be using isextensively revised (updated in the 2½ years since we last visited Four Mile Circle, some of it mapped 6 or 7 years ago) that incorporatesmultiple controlled burnsdone in many areassince our last visit in 2019 which offerroute choices (and features) never before inviting.  E.g. far less blueberry groundcover to thrash through which will richly reward careful map reading.

One apology….to get to these new areas, there will be a 1.2k walk to Start so that all coursescan startin thesemostrecentlyupdated areas (which only the longest advanced course ever get to visit) beforethey turn back home towards Finish.  Hint, hint…getting to that remote Start, some of you could drive family andfriends to Start and return to park atthe Staging Area, then use the walk/jog back to Start as a good warm up.  We are also exploring having some masked “taxi service” for those who could really use that option.

Here are preliminary course stats for you to choose from.  We’ll post final vetted stats within the next week, but they will be very close to these.  Iapologize for the death-defying climbs (topping out at 100m for the 10.1k Blue)which were inevitable in suchsteep and dramatic pineland terrain. ?While the undulating terrain can be subtle, mapped contours decisively show the park’s topography….once you surrender to seeing it.

Please register online as soon as possible.  Course files will go to the printer several days before event Registration officially closes.  So if you want a map of your own, help that process by registering as soon as you know you are coming so that we can make as accurate a guesstimate as possible.  And please consider volunteering an hour or sobefore or after you run your course to help our core staff go out on their own courses.

We promise ideal mid-April weather….and lots of orienteering esprit de corps in this wonderfully unique terrain among DVOA venues, currently and conveniently so inviting before groundcover leafs out.  Courses will take full advantage of theseideal conditions.
