ED/CS Notes:
On Sunday, DVOA will be hosting a mini-rogaine on the Shades of Death map at Hickory Run State Park.
PRE-REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED. You can show up Sunday morning and you will be able to register and particpate, but you will most likely have to draw your controls on your maps.
Race Format: All competitors - both those doing the 3 hour and those doing the 6 hour event - will receive two copies of the Shades of Death map approximately one hour before the beginning of the event, map A and map B. Each map will show 25 control locations. Each competitor (or team) will need two SI-Cards (your own and/or ones provided by DVOA). One SI-card will be for your A map and one for your B map. When you start, you will take your A SI-card and go to as many controls on your A map as you would like, punching those controls with your A SI-card. You will then come back to the start/finish area, punch the finish with your A SI-card, and then proceed to go to as many controls on your B map as you would like, using your B-SI-card. You then return to the start/finish area and punch finish with your B SI-card. Thus, you are basically doing two loops of the map. However, you can elect to do any number of controls on map A (including 0) before punching the finish and proceeding to collect controls on map B.
Scoring: Controls will be worth the same number of points as the control number. Controls are numbered 31 to 80. Thus, for example, control number 47 is worth 47 points. Controls on map B punched before the finish control is punched by the A SI-card will not count. (If you punch one by mistake you will not be penalized, it just will not count unless you go back and punch it again after you are finished with map A and punch finish with your A SI-card.) There will be a hefty penalty (details to be announced) for coming in late.
Divisions: Competitors may race solo or in teams. There will be a 3-hour division and a 6-hour division. There will be male, female and co-ed divisions in both the solo and team categories. If there are enough entries, there will also be junior, open and masters divisions.
Fees: Pre-registered entry fee is $30 per person, regardless of whether you compete in the 3 or 6 hour event and whether you are solo or part of a team. Members of DVOA or OUSA receive a $5 discount. Members of a single family competing on the same team are free after the first two. Juniors - those age 20 and under - are $20 with a $5 discount if memebers of DVOA or OUSA. Your entry fee gets you the following:
- two maps and map bags per person
- free rental of SI-cards per team if needed
- a finisher's award for every competitor
- food after the event
Registration after Sunday, May 12 will include a $10 per person late fee and be limited by the number of maps that are printed. Pre-registration will close on Sunday, May 19. To enter after this date contact the event director, Sandy Fillebrown.
Schedule: Both the 3 hour and 6 hour events will begin at 10:00 am. Registration will open at 8:00am. Maps will be distributed at 9:00am. There will be a group walk to the start at 9:45am. Food will be available beginning at 1:00pm and going until approximately 5:00pm.
Location: Parking will be at the Sand Spring Lake parking area. Registration and post-race activities will take place in the pavilion at the southern end of the parking area. The start and finish area are a short walk away, on the other side of PA 534.
Additional Items:
- DVOA has rented Camp Shehaqua for the weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights). This is a group cabin area. Cabins sleep 2-8 with a few lodges that sleep more. Most cabins do not have electricity. There are central bath houses and a dining hall. Janet Porter will be in charge of Camp Shehaqua for the weekend and will be assigning cabins. The fee to stay at Camp Shehaqua is $12 per person for the weekend, regardless of the number of nights.
- Preview maps of Shades of Death are available for $5 each and will be mailed if ordered by May 12.
- SI-cards will be provided if needed as part of the entry fee. However, if you use one of our SI-cards and lose it, there will be a $40 replacement fee.
- There will be NO water on the course except at the start/finish location. Please carry sufficient water with you.
Registration: On-line pre-registration is highly recommended (see above about late registration). List of those currently registered.
