Event Director/Course Setter Notes:
New Jersey’s Pinelands terrain is calling you – wonderful pine and oak beauty in complicated but subtle low rolling hills full of just blooming blueberry/huckleberry undergrowth. Along with Batsto, the most unique terrain in DVOA-land. Come run in the woods on Saturday (no steep climb, no stony ground), then enjoy the holiday on Sunday.
Along with superb pineland courses, we will also be featuring an Easter Egg hunt on all courses, White through Blue. Of course, White and Yellow will have the most treasures to scoop up, but all of you can slip an egg into your orienteering suit if you can fit it somewhere (don\'t worry, the eggs are plastic) and have a little one who would love you for it.
Mid-April, we promise wonderful weather (winter a long gone memory), and great courses that will gently (but seriously) challenge your orienteering acumen. We will be staging the event from actual Pakim Pond (not just the title of the map) for the first time in a decade. With thick green vegetation surrounding the pond, courses have dictated a 1k walk to start (all flat terrain), and (yes, I’m sorry) a 750m walk from Finish back to Download, to cool you down (again in all flat terrain).
Come enjoy South Jersey\'s best,
Bob
Here are the course statistics with comments:
White – 2.26k – 15m – 10 controls
A nice easy course along trails that will carry you through the woods, with a few route choice options, and some Easter Egg controls to surprise you along the way. Enjoy the unique beauty of the Pinelands, solo or in groups.Yellow – 3.03k – 20m – 11 controls
Ranging a bit further out, with a several cross-terrain options and more complicated route choices appropriate for advanced beginners…and of course Easter Eggs!Orange – 4.30k – 43m – 11 controls
Orange veterans, get ready to run through blueberry/huckleberry…or take the long way around on trails, your choice. This course will test your cross-terrain skills with simple enough control locations, with longer safer options for those new to Orange. Just take care to see all your options...and choose wisely.Brown – 3.50k – 35m – 11 controls
A short Brown. But with the undergrowth, you’ll be happy with the length. Lots of challenging short and medium advanced legs and terrain, rewarding alert direct navigation in criss-crossing legs. I’m particularly pleased with this course, and would love to hear your feedback when you come in.Green – 5.47k – 60m – 11 controls
I stretched out the distance a little so that you can share the first half with Red and Blue. This is the course I’m hoping to run myself if all the logistics are going well. A flat-out advanced course that will offer great terrain and smart route choice to match your skills to. With a mix of long and short legs.Red – 8.10k – 84m – 18 controls
Lots of room to stretch your legs out…with much of the course shared with Blue (and Green) for sharing notes after Finish. With a good variety of short, medium, and long legs, I’m hoping you return with much to talk about (and praise) – ”How many fire ditches did I actually pass before I realized what was happening?....”Blue – 10.60k – 100m – 23 controls
Lots and lots of room to stretch your legs out, then quick clusters of short turn-around legs….with fire ditches and trails to boggle your mind and cross-terrain options to test your map-reading – all in a narrow area that requires length-wise criss-crossing where you will see the same terrain from every angle. So eidetic memory is a plus. 🙂
