There might be more "cunning" than "running" at Camp Delmont. This semi-nearby scout camp's trails could use some maintenance. As of last weekend, one mowed area was studded with impassable brush piles. Trails are leaf-covered as usual at this time of year. On the plus side, this is a good place to work on map skills. This is not a good place for first-timers to go out on their own, but instruction and tips will be available at the start for the "B" course. Don't forget a time piece -- there will be a hefty penalty if you are out longer than 90 minutes. If you never did a score-O before, you get your map with control locations and decide which you can get in 90 minutes and choose your own route. Route planning is fun!
Hope to see you at Camp Delmont. -
Reply by DaveUrban on Thu Oct 11, 2012 at 2:23 pmWorth noting - about half the controls on the B course are White level: on or very near trails. Your challenge to connnect them together in a plan.

Reply by Len on Thu Oct 11, 2012 at 7:44 pmHaving never done a Score-O before and not seeing the answer in any of the details.... do you bring a marker and link together your planned route on your map?

Reply by DaveUrban on Thu Oct 11, 2012 at 8:17 pmA couple options: 1) Estimate the number of controlls/distace you can cover in 90 minutes and focus on an area (like South of Start triangle) to get all those controls or 2) actually plan a detailed route and write the control numbers and order then follow that plan. In either case, Score-O s are fun, note the same format is used in Rogains, just a much longer time limit.

Reply by edscott on Fri Oct 12, 2012 at 7:48 amStrategy depends on the format. If all the controls have the same point value then just plan a route that includes all you can get in the alloted time. I never draw any lines on the map, because as the time goes on your original estimate may be too much or you might have time to squeeze in an extra one. The plan evolves as the clock ticks. If there is a premium score for some of the further or more difficult controls then string a group of them them together and plan approaches to them and back that take you past as many other lower point controls as possible.

Thanks for the pointers.
I have a bunch of technical questions but I'll just wait till I get there and see how it works out. But, I am curious if the controls will be numbered on the map by their control number since there is no sequence number for them. -
Reply by DaveUrban on Fri Oct 12, 2012 at 2:51 pmThe control numbers (31,53,85,...) are on the map - not the sequence numbers (1,2,3,...).

Reply by WindWalker on Sat Oct 13, 2012 at 11:33 amJust thought I'd point out for that in the volunteer section - the times for the start and finish help are the same. Wouldn't the "finish" helpers times be later since there will be finishers coming in as late as 2:30PM?
If I come, I will only be getting there close to 1PM and want to make sure I'm clear on everything.
Thank you,

Reply by BobF on Sat Oct 13, 2012 at 1:50 pmThe Score-O at Delmont is not a mass start. You will be able to start anytime in the normal start window of 10 am to 1 pm. All of the controls are hung so we don't need extra early help. But any other help during the event will be appreciated. As Lisa pointed out finishes will continue until 2:30 or so.
It looks like it is going to be a beautiful Fall day. It is my hope to provide everyone with a fun day in the woods tomorrow. There are some challenges in holding an event the week before NAOC (like no e-punching), but you won't want to miss this opportunity to practice your orienteering skills before the Big Event next week.
Be sure to follow the link from the home page to the news article that gives all of the details about the event.
