Topic created by anniemac on Tue Oct 9, 2012 at 10:01 amCan someone please clarify for me how the changing of the age categories works?
So if I turn an age that puts me into another category - like 45, for example - when do I move into that category - January of that year (no matter when the actual birthday is?) I noticed in the Green Lane results several fine orienteers that are normally in my age category have moved to F45+ (Lisa Carter and Patty Policelli) and I just thought it was strange that it should happen in the middle of the year, unless they had birthdays or something.
Obviously I have too much time on my hands! Back to work. Thanks. :)

Reply by furlong47 on Tue Oct 9, 2012 at 12:26 pmIt is determined by your age on the last day of the year. So for 2012, I started out the year at age 30 and turned 31 in March, but my orienteering age for the entire year is 31. My orienteering age will become 32 on January 1, 2013 even though I don't actually turn 32 until March of 2013.

Reply by WindWalker on Tue Oct 9, 2012 at 12:36 pmHey, Lisa Carter here - I wasn't real concerned about aging 2 years on Sunday - figured it would work itself out. I am still in the 40+ category, I didn't have a birthday, (although presents are welcome) :-)
Thank you for the hard work though Vadim.
Annie, I know that doesn't answer your question - but thought this was a good time to bring it up.
Thank you!!
Lisa

Reply by Vadim on Tue Oct 9, 2012 at 12:38 pmGreen Lane results were combined manually using information people provided on the pink cards. I cross-referenced few entries with online membership database where information was not provided. So, there is a chance Green Lane results do not much actual age category and class.

Reply by anniemac on Tue Oct 9, 2012 at 4:41 pmOkay, cool everyone! Thank you. I'm sure it was a lot more paperwork processing the results at Green Lane and I'm quite astonished that the results were up so quickly! Thanks to the DVOA elves like Vadim for the constant effort so we can enjoy knowing instantly.
Lisa, you are an admirable competitor and I am honored to have you back in my age class. Un-birthday gifts to follow. Confirmation should be made with Patty regarding her age class, because Len said something about her turning 45 this June on attackpoint (but I'm not totally certain.) I'm sure it will sort itself out at the next event...
And thanks to orienteering for bringing all of our ages out into the open where they belong, and for making my 40s way more enjoyable! :) -

Actually, I like the DVOA posting. I am anonymously 45 until the year I turn 50. Then I get to be 50 for 5 years
. I had to triple check Patty’s age as the last thing I want is to state that she is a year older than she really is…especially when it will make her 5 DVOA years older. But yes, she is now 45. But hey, that's a good thing as far as competition - youngest in your class. -

My own personal experience is as follows.
I am currently 48, but for some reason I was in M40+. No problem there, I was ranked higher in M40+. ;-)However, I did fill out the pink card at Green Lane this past weekend and wrote in M45+. Lo and behold, thanks to Vadim and the IT team, I am where I should be agewise. Now, if I can only get the mystery affiliation issue resolved, as I am a DVOA member, but am still a man of mystery. I am sure it will correct itself at some point.
Still learning all of this,

Reply by Len on Tue Oct 9, 2012 at 9:03 pmHi - it's Patty. I am always up for un-birthday presents!

Reply by anniemac on Tue Oct 9, 2012 at 9:31 pmPatty, since you had an age-category-changing birthday this year, you are due for presents for sure! And I just found out that our birthdays are only 3 days apart, so this year on Sunday June 23rd, 2013, I hope the DVOA event will have lots of cake just for us!
Vadim - I couldn't agree more! -

Amazing how one only ages every 5 years in orienteering world after 35 and you don't have to feel guilty those intervening years.
