Patty and I would like to give a big thank you to everyone who helped make the Mt. Penn event successful. We had the Berks County recreation department there with a bunch of new to orienteering people, a photographer from the local paper, and an interview with a reporter from the paper. Keep your eyes open for and article. Our thanks has to start with Ed Scott who did the lions share of the effort is being the course setter and helping walk us through being event director. Next would be the helpers who placed controls that morning, Doug Sevon for jumping into registration, Kathy Urban for setting up e-punch and teaching Patty the system, and Dory Peterson for overseeing the start area. Thanks to the late shift help with Janet Porter at registration, Fred Reed on e-punch and working out all the bugs, Rob Wilkinson and Mary Frank at the start. In between all that was the all the help with instructing new orienteers and general guidance, Mary and Mark Frank, Dave Urban, Dan Barker, Karl Ahlswede.
And finally, to the nice sized group who waited for the last orienteer to finish (even though he took over 4 hours to finish) to take down controls, Ed, Eric, Diane Reider, Samuel Kolins, Fred and Sam Reed, Petr Harman, and Ron Bortz – and an added thanks to Ron for the extra help with e-punch control organization. If we missed anyone, we apologize. We truly appreciate all the help and knowledge that was provided to make the event happen.

Reply by LarryG on Mon Jun 18, 2012 at 8:32 pmWere there Mt. Penn storms last year, too? It was straining my memory, but thanks to our online archives, I was able to see that the nasty rain, hail, thunder and lightning that I remember at Mt. Penn was back in July 2008. Note all the DNF's that day. We were able to sit out the storm in the car, down in the park. Then, when it was over, ascended the mount past all the drenched and pummeled O'ers and complete the rather slippery Brown course.
