DVOA is sponsoring a two session class for the Delmarva Boy Scout Council Merit Badge College. The first session was held the 2nd weekend in January and the 2nd session will be held in 3rd weekend in February. As a part of the merit badge requirement participants are required to act as an event official. Participants will also design courses for a possible Core Creek event. All participants were given Core Creek maps and using the course material on DVOA's web site along with the computer program "Clue" are to design both a course and describe the control sites using IOF control descriptions.
Orienteering Merit Badge Assignment
Your assignment to be turned in at the beginning of the 2nd session is as follows:
Using the map provided in the first session prepare a beginner (white) course or advance beginner (yellow) course or an intermediate (orange course). From the front page on the DVOA website go to "event dirs page" and then to "course setter's guide". Read the information. (Please see the overriding rules below.) This will give you guidance on how to develop the courses. The course should be drawn using red ink if possbile otherwise use blue ink. The start should be designated as a triangle with each control point in the center of each cirle. The control numbers should be drawn on the map oriented to magnetic north. You should also develop control descriptions using the program found at "download clue" under "event dirs page" and then under "clue sheet" or you can draw them free-hand using the cheat sheet handed out in the first class as a guide.
Please note:
Overriding Guidelines for courses: (Use these instead of the guidelines for course length found on the web page. There is no guidance on the web page for the number of controls so we have provided that too.)
- White course - Between 1.5km and 2.5km long with between 6 and 9 controls.
- Yellow course - Between 2.5km and 3.5km long with between 7 and 11 controls.
- Orange course - Between 3.0km and 4.5km long with between 7 controls and 12 controls.
